Familiar Series
The Familiar series is based on the cult classic science fiction novel, Gather, Darkness! by Fritz Leiber. The book details a world that is both futuristic and folktale-like, where dueling forces of a totalitarian religious sect and peasant-supported witches and warlocks who fight for dominance in a post apocalyptic world. One of the central characters and narrators of the novel is the familiar Dicken, or the part human, part animal assistant of the hero warlock.
The notion of the familiar is centuries old, and appears in vastly different cultures and types of spiritualism and witchcraft. The familiar is sometimes even a supposed physical and psychological extension of their master, and Leiber even imagines the familiar as genetically cultured from the witch or warlock's DNA. The concept of the familiar connects to the themes of human and animal interaction in my work. I am interested in exploring a more physical and visceral representation of parables about animals found in folktales and literature.
